A leading authority on China’s economy and financial system, Leland works closely with chief investment officers and corporate boards on their trading and investment strategies, while helping them mitigate long-term risks using China Beige Book’s™ proprietary forecasting platform.
Leland is a frequent commentator on media outlets such as CNBC, Bloomberg TV & Radio, CNN, BNN, BBC, and FOX Business, and he has served as a guest host of both of the financial world’s top morning news shows, CNBC Squawk Box and Bloomberg Surveillance. His work is featured regularly in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, TIME, New Yorker, The Atlantic, Forbes, Foreign Policy, The Hill, and South China Morning Post.
Before co-founding China Beige Book in 2010, Leland was a capital markets attorney based out of New York and Hong Kong and worked on the deal team at a major investment bank. He holds a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was Hardy C. Dillard fellow and editor-in-chief of the International Law Journal; a master’s degree in Chinese History from Oxford University; a BA in European History from Washington & Lee University; and a graduate Chinese language fellowship from Tunghai University (Taiwan).
Leland is an elected member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations and Economic Club of New York, an elected life member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security at the Atlantic Council.

Dr. Derek Scissors
A recognized expert on China’s economy, trade, and investment flows, Derek leads the firm’s proprietary analytic and forecasting services and advises clients on market entry, China’s regulatory compliance regime, and U.S.-China trade policy.
For over a decade Derek has run the China Global Investment Tracker, the only comprehensive, publicly available data set covering China’s global investment and construction activity. He is a frequent commentator on Bloomberg TV & Radio, CNBC, and Fox Business, and writes for major national publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Barron’s, and Foreign Affairs. He is a ubiquitous presence on Capitol Hill and is asked regularly to provide testimony to the Congress on matters relating to the US-China economic relationship.
Derek is concurrently a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute and an adjunct professor at George Washington University. Previously he served as a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a consultant for London-based Intelligence Research Ltd., and an advisor to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Derek holds a Ph.D. in International Political Economy from Stanford University, an M.A. in Economics from the University of Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Michigan
As the firm-wide operations lead, Shehzad oversees product innovation, client services, new business acquisition, and corporate strategy at China Beige Book International.
Since 2012, Shehzad has helped develop data collection for the China Beige Book™ platform and supervised the analytics team. During this time, he has also designed innovative services and macro strategic and sectoral products for the firm’s financial markets and corporate clients, including dedicated practices for clients in the commodities and shipping industries.
Previously, Shehzad worked at a strategic public opinion research firm and conducted market intelligence and strategic communications polling in emerging and frontier economies.
Shehzad holds an M.A. in International Relations from New York University and a B.A. in International Studies from Indiana University. He writes regularly for Foreign Policy, Huffington Post, World Politics Review, and World Affairs, and is an elected member of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations.
